Botox vs Filler!

Let's talk about Botox and Filler!

This month's blog post looks at the difference between Botox and Filler. Exploring what they are, how they work and all the things you want to know!

Botox can help minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles and Filler contains ingredients that add fullness to specific areas.

What is Botox?

Smooth & Natural

At BB Skin we now offer advanced botox (anti-wrinkle) treatments which includes the upper/lower face and neck. Anti-Wrinkle Injectables work to prevent the formation of static wrinkles by stopping the signal between the nerve and muscle.

How does it work?

Botox works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When those nerve signals are interrupted, the affected muscle is temporarily frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face, certain wrinkles may be softened, reduced, or even removed.

Very fine needles are used to administer the toxin, making this procedure fairly comfortable.

Let’s talk facts…

  • The duration of the procedure is: 30 minutes

  • The recovery time for this procedure is: 24 hours

  • The duration of the results: Up to 6 months

  • The potential risks & complications: Slight pain and bruising

What are Fillers?

Enhance, Lift, Define and Conceal

Dermal fillers are substances designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. At BB Skin Clinc only high quality CE marked filler is used, containing a highly pure Hyaluronic Acid that reduces swelling after injection. The fillers used also have a high viscoelasticity, allowing the filler to keep its shape for an extended period of time.

How does it work?

Fillers work by using hyaluronic acid to “fill in” or plump areas that have lost volume and smoothness. This includes wrinkles around the mouth, thin lips, and cheeks that have lost fullness. They may also be used on forehead wrinkles and other areas that need extra volume for a smoother look. Dermal fillers provide gentle lift and contouring in order to fill the ogee curve and provide a more youthful appearance.

What is the Ogee Curve?

The ogee curve is the central facial triangle or the double soft-S curves that are seen on the youthful face from an oblique angle. There is fullness in the lateral brow that softly curves where the upper and lower eyelids meet, then softly curves outward on the upper cheek to again curve inward just above the mouth. As we age the natural curve collapses as the face loses the volume found in youth.

Let’s talk facts…

  • The duration of the procedure is: 1 hour

  • The recovery time for this procedure is: 2 weeks

  • The duration of the results: 6 months - 2 years

  • The potential risks & complications: Immediately after dermal filler injections the treatment area may be red, tender or swollen. The redness and tenderness should improve after 48 hours. Swelling is often worse on days 2-3 after injection, improved by day 5 and resolved by 2 weeks.

Key differences

In summary, the differences between Botox and fillers are:

  • Botox: This freezes muscles to stop creases and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. These are typically found in the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes.

  • Dermal fillers: These use hyaluronic acid to “fill in” or plump areas that have lost volume and smoothness. This includes wrinkles around the mouth, thin lips, and cheeks that have lost fullness.

  • Botox results last up to 6 months. Dermal filler results can last up to 2 years!

Because Botox and fillers are different substances designed for different uses, they can sometimes be combined in one treatment. For instance, someone may use Botox to correct lines between the eyes and a filler to correct smile lines around the mouth.

BB Skin Clinic specialises in a patient centred approach to meet the clients aesthetic goals.
